About BIMinNZ
The leading professional, volunteer-run nonprofit association representing Aotearoa New Zealand’s BIM Management, Digital Engineering, and Asset Information Management community. We are passionate and committed to enhancing the efficiency and productivity of the built and operational environment by supporting the creation and management of both graphical and non-graphical information throughout the asset lifecycle.
BIMinNZ History
BIMinNZ was originally established in February 2014 as a nationwide alliance between industry and government, aimed at coordinating efforts to increase the use of BIM in New Zealand. The BIM Acceleration Committee (BAC) served as the national governance group for BIMinNZ and secured up to $250,000 from the Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) over three financial years ending March 2020. This funding supported activities that accelerated BIM adoption, in alignment with BRANZ research funding requirements. The BAC’s terms of reference, developed in 2017, outlined its structure, membership, and scope. In September 2021, the BAC was dissolved, and its remaining members established the BIMinNZ Steering Group as a sub-committee under the New Zealand Institute of Building (NZIOB). In 2024, BIMinNZ stepped away from NZIOB, initiating a collaborative nationwide effort to form a new national committee in June 2025. The aim was to bring renewed energy and ideas to BIMinNZ, with a focus on information creation and management throughout the asset lifecycle, while building on progress made since 2014. A revised version of the terms of reference was developed in 2025 to guide future efforts and support BIMinNZ’s regional and national initiatives moving forward.
Driving Force Behind BIMinNZ
The regional and national committee members of BIMinNZ serve as the guiding leadership behind this community; a nationwide alliance of industry experts, policymakers, asset owners, and academia. Their shared goal is to improve the efficiency of how projects are planned, designed, constructed, and operated across New Zealand. Since its establishment in February 2024, BIMinNZ has consistently led coordinated efforts to promote the development and implementation of data-driven approaches throughout the lifecycle of assets.
